Beyond Talent

“Beyond talent lie all the usual words: discipline, love, luck – and, above all, endurance."                                                                                                                    – James Baldwin

Success Stories (Continued)

Here are some examples of what Beyond Talent is accomplishing:

  • Meeka – She has completed her second semester of college.  Last year she tutored at Living Wages.  She’s now helping Ellie Phillips with Beyond Talent.  She’s taking the summer off and going back to UDC in the fall.  She helped a Living Wages student fill out the FAFSA online.  Her seven-year-old daughter is very proud of her.  Her dream is to become a social worker and help “troubled teens.”

  • Marcellus Arnold – Got his GED from Academy of Hope and gave the graduation speech at the UDC commencement for GED graduates.  He finished his first semester of college at Southeastern University (SEU) with a 3.5 GPA.  He went double-time this semester and completed the Certified Addiction Counselor course while taking a full load at SEU.  He will take the certification exam. He still tutors at Academy of Hope.  He also talks to the students about college and has taken a couple of other Academy of Hope  GED grads to visit the SEU campus.

  • Linda – Got her GED from Living Wages.  Working with a Beyond Talent volunteer, she researched entrepreneur training programs and enrolled at UDC.  She hopes to own her own business someday. S he tutors every week at Living Wages.  Her supervisor there says Linda is “a natural teacher.”  Linda has two daughters in college.

  • Steven – He got his GED from Living Wages and worked for Beyond Talent during his first semester at UDC.  He then got a part-time job mentoring at-risk youth in public schools.

  • Jewell – She got her GED from Living Wages and tutored at Living Wages through Beyond Talent.  The small stipend and assistance kept her and her husband afloat while he underwent surgery and she got her LPN training and license.  She now has a good full-time job with benefits at Washington Hospital Center.  Her husband had successful knee replacement surgery and was able to return to his job, too.

  • Yvette – Got her EDP from Living Wages, became a Beyond Talent mentor.  A former small business owner, he did such a great job working for Living Wages that they recruited her to work for them full-time through an AmeriCorps program.  She is now a member of Notre Dame AmeriCorps and working at Living Wages EDP program full-time.
